Parallax is a yellow being made entirely of fear. He has been in creation since the beginning of creation, much like the Guardians. Over time, Parallax ravaged thousands of worlds, each one going insane at the very sight of him. Fear led to violence which led to fear. It was an endless cycle to to feed Parallax. Eventually the Guardians constructed the Central Power Battery to collect willpower from all the beings in the universe. The two powers confronted, but could not destroy each other due to their opposite energies. Instead, Parallax was imprisoned in the Central Power Battery.

Due to the events of Rebirth, we all now know that Parallax was not entirely Hal Jordan. Rather, it was a yellow being made of fear that has been influencing Jordan's actions since he was awoken by Sinestro some time in the past. Sinestro's "death" was the last step for Parallax to gain a foothold in Jordan's soul. Now however, with the help of the Spectre, Hal Jordan's soul has been cleansed of Parallax, but Parallax has found a new host.... Ganthet.

Ganthet was eventually freed of Parallax by the remaining GLs. He signaled the Guardians on Oa to make ready the Central Battery. Hal was able to siphon Parallax back to the Central Battery through his power ring, where he is now imprisoned.
