Relatively little is known about the criminal now calling himself Sonar. He first surfaced in New York City, attempting to isolate Manhattan island and claim it as his personal kingdom. He was thwarted by the combined efforts of third-generation heroes Green Lantern and Flash. When next he struck, Sonar's appearance had been radically altered. Large areas of the subcutaneous microcircuitry that produces his sonic abilities had been exposed, a gruesome sight he apparently relishes.

Sonar's plans have been repeatedly thwarted by Green Lantern Kyle Rayner. Any connection to the previous Sonar, Modoran inventor and terrorist Bito Waldon, is pure conjecture at this point, though their sonic powers appear to share numerous similarities.
